About

My name is Tim Koba and I am an athletic trainer and strength and conditioning coach specializing in athletic and fitness development.

As an athletic trainer I went to school to learn about injuries; preventing them, assessing them, rehabilitating them and managing them. I have always been into strength and fitness and working with others to achieve their goals, so after graduating I worked in the fitness industry as a personal trainer for years. I then started working in a sports medicine office on the diagnostic side of injuries. I had the opportunity to build relationships with local schools by providing sports medicine care through our outreach program. I developed a summer training program that was geared toward preparing high school athletes for their Fall season that was based on injury prevention, speed, agility and conditioning. My strength and conditioning philosophy is to create workouts that improve strength through progressive overload and periodization, and conditioning through circuit training, supersets, intervals, and speed and agility work.

After working for several years I developed a passion for the administrative side of sports medicine and fitness, so I went back to school to earn my Master's in Sport Management. While the coursework was geared toward the athletic industry, the concepts I learned are global: finance and budgeting, marketing, organizational theory, management theory and law. During my time in school I did a lot of research on leadership and wrote a paper and accompanying white paper exploring the subject.

While the two degrees at first seem to be conflicting, I find that being knowledgeable in one area makes me better in another. Being an athletic trainer makes me a better strength coach because I understand injury patterns and rehabilitation and being a strength coach makes me a better athletic trainer because I understand strength training, progression and conditioning principles. Similarly, being trained as a manager makes me a better clinician since I have a different perspective on organizational effectiveness and leadership and being a clinician improves my management since I understand how decisions impact those that have to implement them.

I am always looking to expand my knowledge and understanding of the areas that I am interested in. I have earned several certifications in the fitness field to increase my ability to effectively work with clients. With my passion for learning, comes a passion for sharing what I learn with others, which is the reason for this blog. When I research a topic to learn more about it I share what I learn with others to improve our collective intelligence. By blending my education and experience I feel that I have unique skills that allow me the ability to look at problems from different perspectives and offer solutions that have the greatest impact for all stakeholders.

With an interest in organizational and business effectiveness I have worked with individuals to create business plans and lay the framework necessary for their success. I help them to understand their customers and look at the business from their perspective. We work together to articulate the vision in order to be better positioned to achieve success.

My job as a coach (both strength and management) is to guide the process, build the foundation for success, and encourage others to reach their goals.
